It’s exciting to finally share the mural I made for the Buffalo Bills Public Art Program at Highmark Stadium. I still need to do the final documentation photos. The mural is in an entrance hallway/stairwell on the 100 level. It’s quite difficult to photograph. The piece, entitled “The Elements” is 6 feet high by 36 feet long, acrylic paint on dibond panels. In the slides I note the meaning of the various images.
I didn’t grow up being super interested in sports, but as I got older I came to realize the value of having something that people care about across all of the lines that divide a city. And now in the age of streaming and AI, sports are starting to feel like one of the few things that create a sense of a collective present. And, of course, because this is an underdog city that’s had a pretty rough 50 years of economic and population decline, it feels psychologically important to support this team.
It’s very cool that all of the 40 artists are from or connected to the Western New York area, there are a broad range of approaches to the subject matter you can see them all on the Bills website.
• Artists applied via a competitive RFP process and were selected by local art representatives and project stakeholders who comprised the Selection Panel.
• Artists were commissioned for site-specific, new artwork for the Stadium permanent collection.
